From its independence in 1962 Algeria has opted for the development of the electricity sector.
Already announced by the National Charter in 1976 the will to generalize the domestic electrification through the whole national territory before the end of the 1990 decade will have a major impact on the extension of distribution networks.
The transport networks will also be substantially expanded due to the abundant gas resources.
Therefore given the task entrusted to it by the public authorities Sonelgaz played a major role in this context. Its efforts resulted in the realization of important infrastructure works enabling the electrical cover of 96% of the national territory.
