1. Physical investments

A cumulative process has been observed in the development of electrical networks made up of works for production, transport facilities VHT/HT (very high tension) and remote southern networks. In this way production facilities reached 5,600 MW in 2001, transport networks more than 13,800 km and distribution networks more than 190,000 km of medium and low tension lines.

The national electricity coverage amounts to 96%. The charts hereunder show the trends of annual and cumulated achievements over the period 1978-2001 with regard to networks length, connected homes and electrification rate.

> accumulation Network length
> accumulation number of hearths

> Evolution of the Rate of National electrification

The achievements of the rural electrification for 2001 amounted to 3,362 km of MTLT (medium and low tension) with an objective MTLT of 3658 km, or an achievement rate of 92%. This allowed the connecting of 675 centers and 40 agricultural perimeters and the supply of 31923 homes.

With regard to the Own Programme (financed by Sonelgaz) the achievements have been of 1375 km MTLT in 2001 with an objective of 2261 km MTLT, or an achievement rate of 60%.

2. Customers

The increase in the number of connections was significant made efforts, the number of customers HT passed from 2 in 1962 to 63 in 2001, the MT from 3062 to 31310, and finally low tension from 705.000 to more than 4.676.000 customers.

The disparity which existed in the electrification of the country at the independence in 1962 has completely changed, the national rate of electrification passed from 33% in 1962 to 96% in 2001. (relative rate except scattered habitat)

The achievements of connection of the new customers (RCN) of year 2001 reached 2 709 km MTBT on an initial objective of 2.809 km MTBT, that is to say a rate of realization of more than 96%, to connect 106 755 customers.

3. Financial investments

The volume of the financial investments mobilized since 1962 illustrate the effort well agreed by the authorities and SONELGAZ.

The works carried out since independence required considerable investments, more than 21.6 billion US$ in 1999 were invested in the field, including only 40% in rural electrification.
