Introduction

The Algerian oil product market, estimated in year 2007 at 12.2 millions tons, is held mostly by the public utility Naftal, a subsidiary of the group SONATRACH.

For the distribution and the storage of the petroleum products, in addition to the filling stations as well as the points of gas conditioned butane sale, which were open for a long time to the third third parties investment, and where the local private companies are strongly represented, investors begin to take more and more place in in the other distribution activities.

It should be stressed that the investors engaged to date in the activities of oil products distribution are made up of small local private compagnies of a small scale, except some foreign companies, which are in activity in through their subsidiary governed by algerian law, following the example:

• SPA TOTAL BITUMES ALGERIE, formulation and the distribution of the bitumens.
• TOTAL SPA LUBRIFIANTS ALGERIE, storage and the distribution of the lubricants.
• SPA SHELL MARKETING ALGERIE, storage and the distribution of the lubricants.
• SPA ESSO MOBIL ALGERIE, storage and the distribution of the lubricants.

Consumption of Petroleum products

The Algerian market of the petroleum products is presented as follows:

1. Fuels

The fuel yearly consumption is 9.85 million tons, of which:

• Gasolines : 2.06 million tons approximately, of which 214.843 tons for unleaded gas

• Fuel oil : 6.74 million tons

• Carburizing LPG : 330,940 tons

• Aviation and marine : 721,149 tons

2. LPG combustible use

• Gas conditioned butane: 1.35 million tons

• Gas propane: 145,925 tons

3. Lubricants* : 150,662 tons

4. Bitumens* : 662.371 tons

5. Solvents containing petroleum products : 23.682 TM
